It was a pleasant long drive from LA to San Francisco, I was happy to get out of Beverly Hills! Here I was expecting the food as usual to be miles miles better across the board. We decided to take a chance on Flores which claims to be a place that offers regional Mexican dishes and flavours holding a Michelin Bib Gourmand. That should mean that the restaurant is not bad at all… Unfortunately, we could have eaten a better meal at Taco Bell… The restaurant says that they source family recipes originating in Mexican states from The Gulf to The Pacific, all sounding very convincing, and maybe it is true, but the food that we ate was more akin to a fast-food operation.
The tacos did not taste fresh and of vibrant ingredients, the tortillas mediocre. They could have all been reheated not freshly made. The taste was that of a Deliveroo order when you cannot be bothered to cook and are having an off day, it arrives and it’s just ugh… The fillings had this distinctive ‘leftover’ taste like they had been cooked and stored yesterday. The churros were possibly one of the worst I have ever tasted, poorly executed, looking like they had been reheated and already fried beforehand. The shape looked quite odd too, not your usual churros shape where you cannot wait to take a bite of the first one and eat the whole plate.
It was all just an unpleasant mess, so much for coming to San Francisco for much better food! As I peered into the kitchen that was open plan, I saw a lot of storage boxes on display and quite a hectic and fast paced environment. This was not what I was expecting judging by their website. Marketing hey… There is always this question as well, if a restaurant has time to offer delivery and pick-up how good is that food really going to be? I should pay more attention to that in future. We had a spoiled night here and as it was late, there was no back-up plan. Go home hungry, I guess. Nice. Welcome to San Francisco. Let us hope the rest of the trip picks up.
