Mourayo

Spetses

"The tuna was cooked perfectly"

"Service can make all the difference between somebody returning or not, everything is relative In hospitality"

As we wandered around Spetses looking for a place to eat, we came across Mourayo. Initially I was not completely sure, so we asked to see the menu so I could do my ‘checks.’ We were welcomed by the owner, who was kind and helpful. As I peered at the menu he declared “We also have fresh tuna today if you would like?” Well, that sold it, and being a local Greek catch, it was exactly what we fancied. The menu here was a rare sight to see because it was one of the only ones that had a couple of dishes in each section, and this pleased me. Finally! Too many restaurants on the island are drowning in large menus, catering to tourists, where the freezer is their best friend. My first impression of Mourayo gave me confidence and the setting here is lovely, perfect for an evening dinner.

The aubergine rolls had sweetness coming from the tomatoes, and prominence from the herbs coming through. Smokey, with feta. We turned to each other and said, “these are good.” The Cretan Ravasaki was crisp, with more feta to be had (You can never have too much!) They carried the right amount of sweetness to compensate. The main course of tuna was super fresh, as to be expected! The chef knew that he didn’t need to do much to the fillet, being perfect as it was. Grilled simply, and showing attractive marks from the grill. Alongside was a straightforward quinoa salad, and some lemon to squeeze over the fish. The tuna was cooked perfectly with still some pink in the middle; the product was top. And most importantly you could really taste the true flavour of the tuna because nothing else was overshadowing it. A perfect plate for what it was. And a bonus thrown in- This was a healthy and nutritious meal. I can be proud of myself there.

The service here is also to be mentioned: Everybody was trying their best to be kind and they were smiling with drive to do their best. Service is an especially important part in a restaurant, and I have noticed in Greece (depending on where you are) that some waiters do not care at all and will act how they want to, doesn’t matter if you are a paying customer! Here though, they cared about this and how their customers feel. We noticed and appreciated it. Service can make all the difference between somebody returning or not, everything is relative in hospitality and it’s not just all about the food. Thankfully for Mourayo, for a restaurant on the island of Spetses, they stand out amongst the rest of the crowd.

In the night it could be a time to get out your island dress here. It is one of the ‘fancier’ places on the island. Or you can be as casual as you prefer, the choice is yours. There is not a dress code.
