I was pleasantly surprised by Zephyr, as I wasn’t entirely sure if it was going to be good or not. I love Greek ingredients and dishes, they are always normally very flavourful, simple to prepare and healthy. I tend to focus a lot on this cuisine at home as it is one of my favourites to cook. I own a lot of Greek recipe books where I am always learning a new dish or two, and if you are trying to keep the weight down or consciously thinking more about what you are putting in your body, focusing on mediterranean food in general is a suitable place to start. The thing is, sometimes you just don’t want to cook, and it would be wonderful if I could find another decent restaurant offering an authentic Greek feast.
This is where Zephyr came in. Their menu instantly caught my eye, with a small number of dishes into each section and a gluten free “sourdough” That was enough to make me want to try. The food was well prepared and I felt the quality into the plates. You can’t sit here and not order pitta bread with a bowl of their tzatziki, the bread tasted authentic and exactly like the homemade ones made by excellent chefs in Greece. The tzatziki was spot on.
Often at home I am making baked butter beans, I love this dish so here I just had to compare it! It was good with plenty of feta and Kalamata olives, all the flavours melded together well, and I loved the addition of the onion. The beans themselves cooked perfectly and they were moorish. I just ate it all with my spoon, no knife and fork needed.
I ended my lunch with the wild prawns, (Tomato, daikon, and ouzo) This dish reminds me of why Greek product and cuisine is top. The prawns I ate here were simple but good and that’s what is important. Oozing with flavour with just a few ingredients, and the prawns cooked perfectly, a satisfying dish.
With a brief visit and just a couple of courses, I could see that this is a solid place to come to eat. The chef may repeat the same dishes which is fine by me, but the kitchen did seem well practised and know exactly what they are doing, there is a confidence here. The only thing that was negative was the service/atmosphere, it was a little cold especially from the gentleman that served me like I was irrelevant, which we must remember that we are in UK here not Greece… The food was great, but overall would I come back? Not sure for now.
