Whenever I am writing about restaurants in Greece, you can’t not mention the surroundings especially when you are eating on the bay. Doroufi restaurant is another example of this, having one of the most amazing views. On this occasion I popped in for a lunch, it was quiet with a lot of tables free, but I didn’t mind it. We sat on a table directly with the beach and sea within our grasp, clear skies, and the tranquil movement of the calm waves. Judging by the scenery I was hoping that the food was going to match it, because if so, there can’t be anything better than this! The usual Greek classics were on the menu (From place to place they tend to be the same, so you find yourself repeatedly talking about them). There is only so many times that you can describe a tzatziki! However, it is important that it is prepared with detail and tasting delicious. This one was. The addition of the olive oil on top finished it off.
Points scored for Doroufi on the bread, they are the first to offer gluten free and their normal bread offering is handmade and traditional, lots of slices come in a basket and it was the first one I tried in a restaurant in this area, where I didn’t yawn with disappointment. Normally I push it to the side and leave it, (because it’s not worth gaining weight for), but not here, “finally some proper bread”! I said joyfully. I enjoyed it so much that I asked for a container to take the rest home and I ate it for my dinner and breakfast the next day. When you come across good bread, it is not to be wasted. Trying courgette fritters is never boring for me, I like them, and the recipes differ from cook to cook. These ones were the best so far, perfectly hot, crisp, and not too liquid in the middle. Served on top of a Greek mint yogurt.

I was saddened to see some frozen shellfish on the menu, but I have come to terms with that now, since it’s something that will not change here. I will never touch frozen prawns or squid; it is utterly pointless and should be banned. However, we did have some fresh local tuna which had some grill marks and a mixture of boiled vegetables on the side. Simply cooked and it all tasted great, a healthy choice. Doroufi is up there with the best restaurants to visit in Ermionida. Seeing how it goes for a dinner can be a good comparison whilst trying a bigger variety of dishes. The views with the sunset will be something…
