The Fondue Hut

The Fife Arms, Braemar

"Bringing atmosphere true to the Scottish way"

"Where it is cold, this is sure to warm you up and put a smile on your face"

Another offering for dinner at The Fife Arms is their ‘fondue hut’- It is all in the title. Generous amounts of oozing cheese kept warm at your table whilst you dip and swirl anything in it that comes your way from the accompaniments. Chunks of bread and potatoes are always the best for a fondue (Most of the time you don’t have to bother with anything else.) We took a couple of sharing boards too- One vegetable focused and another with cold cuts, smoked fish. These are great additions to go alongside the fondue if you are wanting to eat a lot of different things and wish to have a break from all the cheese (As if!)

I love the décor in here: faux fur covered chairs, red gingham tablecloth giving the impression that you are in a mountain lodge, with authentic antlers above your head bringing atmosphere true to the Scottish way. There are a few fondues to choose from- A ‘Scottish’ version and a traditional. We obviously took both to share around the table. The Scottish one was new for me- Tain ‘Fat Cow’ & Isle of Mull cheddar, Brewdog pale ale and nutmeg. The traditional consisted of Schlossberger & Appenberger cheese from Emmental valley, white wine, garlic, and nutmeg. Both were delicious but if I had to choose, the traditional had the edge.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have the opportunity to choose the chocolate fondue this time for dessert, but this is served with warm doughnuts, salted pretzels, fresh fruit, and nuts. The chocolate is 72% dark with Royal Lochnagar whiskey. This would be worth to test drive on another visit.

The Fondue Hut is suiting the place well and every hotel should offer this, whether it’s in the highlands of Scotland or a chalet in the Dolomites. Where it is cold, this is sure to warm you up and put a smile on your face, leaving you totally satisfied for the rest of the night. Just know when to stop eating!
